MICHAEL J. PUZO
MICHAEL J. PUZO joined Hemenway & Barnes after his graduation from law school and was named a partner in 1984. In his practice, Mr. Puzo focuses primarily on trust and estate work, with a particular emphasis on his service as a trustee of private trusts and charitable foundations. He also devotes a substantial amount of his time to sophisticated estate and charitable gift planning and to the resolution of probate disputes. Mr. Puzo served as the firm's Managing Partner from 1998 to 2006.
A resident of Hingham, Mr. Puzo has been active in the town's civic affairs for over twenty years, and currently serves as Chairman of the Hingham Personnel Board, which is responsible for the town's employee relations, union negotiations and personnel policies. He also has served on the Hingham Zoning Board of Appeals, the Hingham Transportation Committee and the Hingham Water Supply Committee.
Mr. Puzo is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a member of the Estate Planning Committee of the Boston Bar Association and a past member of the Professional Advisory Committee of the Boston Foundation. He is an Overseer of the Boston College Law School and serves on the Executive Committee of the Boston College Law School Fund. Mr. Puzo is a Trustee and past President of the South Shore Conservatory of Music, a member of the Board of Visitors of Walnut Hill School and served for six years as a Trustee of Notre Dame Academy, Hingham.
In 2005, the Boston College Law School presented Mr. Puzo with the Founder's Medal, the school's highest honor. The Founder's Medal is named after John B. Creedon, S.J., who was instrumental in establishing the Law School in 1929 and whose dedication to academic excellence and to the law inspired the award's creation. Recipients of the Founder's Medal embody the tradition of professionalism, scholarship and service that the Law School seeks to instill in its students.
Mr. Puzo has served as a faculty member for educational programs presented by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., the American Law Institute-American Bar Association, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the Boston Estate Planning Council, having also served on the Executive Committee of that organization. Mr. Puzo has written on the topic of charitable gift planning for Trusts and Estates Magazine and the Journal of Taxation of S Corporations, on will and trust drafting for MCLE and ALI-ABA, and on the Prudent Investor Act and on fiduciary liability for the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
He received his B.A. from Boston College in 1974 (magna cum laude, Phi Beta
Kappa) and his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1977.
