KATHERINE S. MCHUGH earned her law degree from Northeastern University in 1974. Before moving into her current work in philanthropy, Ms. McHugh had a 15-year career as a trial lawyer in Boston. Prior to joining HEMENWAY & BARNES in 1996, Ms. McHugh was lead administrator of the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust at Grants Management Associates of Boston. Now as the director of the Donor Services Office at Hemenway & Barnes, she works with charitable clients, trusts and foundations seeking to maximize the effectiveness and impact of their charitable investments.

Ms. McHugh currently serves on the National Advisory Committee for the National Initiative to Promote the Growth of Philanthropy. She has worked on various committees and projects for Associated Grant Makers, including its Giving New England promotion of philanthropy initiative, and joined the AGM Board of Directors in June 1999. She also serves on the Governing Board and Executive Committee of the Boston Annenberg Challenge in the Boston Public Schools. In addition to providing philanthropic planning support to several emerging family foundations and individual donors, she is program director and coordinator of both philanthropy and education grantmaking for the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust, now a client of the Donor Services Office, which awards $3 million annually in grants to support projects throughout New England in the fields of education, health care, the environment, and the development of philanthropy.

During her tenure in the legal profession, she served the legal and nonprofit communities on various boards of directors related to delivery of legal services to the indigent. She was the first woman President of Greater Boston Legal Services, and chaired the IOLTA Committee, a statewide legal fund established by the Supreme Judicial Court to improve access to justice. In 1992 she received the Boston Bar Association's Denis Maguire Award for distinguished service to the profession and the community.

She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Northeastern University, serves on the Executive Committee and chaired the Academic Affairs Committee responsible for the University's tenure process. She has served her local community as a member of its affordable housing commission, Finance Committee, and as chairman of the Board of Selectmen. She is also former president of the local school foundation, providing grants annually to local teachers.
