Rachel L. Pohl graduated from Trinity College with a Bachelor of Arts in
1978 and from Columbia University with a Masters in Public Administration.
She brings over 13 years experience in philanthropy to the Donor Services
Office at Hemenway & Barnes. As Associate Director of the Donor Services
Office, Ms. Pohl provides strategic planning, technical assistance, and
program grant review and evaluation support to clients interested in
charitable investment services. She also serves as the senior program
officer for health and environmental grantmaking for the Jessie B. Cox
Charitable Trust, a New England-focused philanthropy.
Ms. Pohl's experience prior to her current tenure at Hemenway & Barnes
includes four years as an administrator at Grants Management Associates where
she provided program support for the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust. From
1991 until 1992, she consulted with the Collaboration of Community
Foundations for the Gulf of Maine Ecosystem, a U.S./Canadian philanthropy
partnership. From 1987 until 1991, she managed the national grantmaking
program of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation with an emphasis on environment,
health and community development priorities. These activities also included
U.S.-Mexico border issues as well as international priorities including trade
and global environmental concerns and reproductive rights. From the mid-70's
until 1987, Ms. Pohl worked in the nonprofit and private sectors managing
community development and energy-related programming and in environmental
consulting to public sector agencies.
Ms. Pohl is active in philanthropic networks, including Associated Grant
Makers, Council on Foundations, Grantmakers In Health, Environmental
Grantmakers Association, Maternal/Child Health Public Private Partnership
Initiative, the Health and Environmental Funders Network as well as New
England state-based funders networks. She is a member of the American Public
Health Association and Amnesty International. Ms. Pohl also was the
recipient of a Ford Foundation internship in Peru.
